This drabble was written for the 100 Words/Heat Waves
comment_fic prompt: Sherlock, Sherlock Holmes +/ John Watson, sunburn.
“I knew I should’ve asked if you’d put on sunscreen.”
John sat on the edge of their coffee table, carefully applying an aloe vera moisturizer to Sherlock’s sunburnt face.
“I can do this myself you know,” Sherlock muttered.
“We both know you won’t though. Now hold still.”
Surprisingly, Sherlock did as he was told and remained silent. John continued gently smoothing the cream into Sherlock’s skin. Sherlock sighed quietly in relief, and John ignored the fact that the sound was probably making his own skin turn pink.
“Now,” John cleared his throat, “You might want to do this next bit yourself, since it will be easier to do without your shirt on -”
Sherlock unbuttoned his shirt and flung it onto the couch in a matter of seconds. He winced once the pain of moving around actually registered in his brain.
“Do you mind? I won’t be able to reach some of the spots on my back -”
John cleared his throat again. “No that’s - it’s - fine.” He took the bottle of deep green aloe vera gel and began applying cooling layers to all the deep red patches on Sherlock’s bare chest, shoulders, and neck. John tried to ignore the fact that Sherlock had closed his eyes and seemed to not be bothered by how close John was to him.
“Okay, that should be...good.” John stood up from the table.
Sherlock opened his eyes. “Mmm. What now?”
“Well, you should probably have some water. It’s likely you’re dehydrated. Does it still hurt?”
Sherlock shifted around on the sofa. “A little.”
“I’ll get you a pain reliever then - and a towel, so you can lie down on the sofa without getting aloe all over it.”
John shuffled around the flat and returned with one of Sherlock’s towels, a large cup of ice water, and a couple of small pills. He spread the towel out on the couch, and handed Sherlock the water and the pills. Sherlock swallowed the meds unceremoniously and took a small sip of water before curling up on the towel-covered couch.
“Right,” John muttered, and collapsed in his armchair.
“Thank you, John.” Sherlock’s voice was so small and quiet that if the rest of the flat hadn’t also been quiet in that moment, John would have missed it.
“You’re welcome,” John replied, “Just remember to wear sunscreen.”
“Duly noted. Telly?” Sherlock asked.
“Only if you drink some more water.”
